BANGALORE: If you are travelling to Electronic City through the elevated expressway, be prepared to shell out Rs 5 more than what you used to pay earlier. From now on, two-wheelers have to pay Rs 15 and those using four-wheelers have to pay Rs 35 for a single trip.

The revised toll came into force from July 12, 2010. The Bangalore Elevated Tollway Limited (BETL) general manager MR Deshpande said that the tolls have been revised based on the wholesale price index (WPI).

"The toll rate is tied up with the WPI as per the agreement signed. Every year, tolls would be revised as per the changes in the WPI. This time, the toll has been increased with the increase in WPI. This is a standard practice by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI)," he said.

He added that the rates are fixed by the NHAI and they only implement it.

However when contacted, NHAI project director RK Gupta said: "We are not responsible for the increase in toll and it is the BETL which fixes it."

Deshpande said that they had informed the Electronic City Industrial Association (ELCIA) prior to implementing the revised toll.

HK Abhishek, a software professional who commutes everyday to Electronic City, said: "While the toll for a single trip has been increased by Rs 5, it remains the same for two trips and the monthly pass remains the same. However, the daily passes valid for 24 hours, is now valid only till 11.59pm. This means, if we are returning home late, we have to pay for the ticket again," he said.

H Prakash Rao of Electronic City Industries' Association said: "We are worried if the takers for the elevated expressway will come down. It will have some temporary effect."
